Solar System Donations

16 02 2010

The 2010 Boise Dream Home is being built as a net zero home; simply stated, the home will produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year.  Unlike off-grid, the site will be connected to the grid, both to draw power and share surplus generation using Idaho Power’s Net Metering program.  To achieve this pinnacle level of green building every component within the home is specified to reduce the overall energy required to operate the home.  As the building process takes shape, we’ll post the individual components that will add-up to a tight building envelope equipped complete with energy efficient products to ensure the home will use as little energy as possible.

To obtain the net zero mark, the home must also produce its own electricity. Energytech, a local Boise area Home Performance Specialist and Green Building Verification company, and the Department of Energy’s Building America have been developing modeling data to determine the most appropriate renewable energy options for the Dream Home as well as consulting on the individual components of the home.   Solar has been identified as the most obtainable and cost-effective source of renewable energy for the Boise Dream Home.

Idaho Renewable Energy Association has donated a complete Photovoltaic system for the home! This is an amazing contribution for a home that is being constructed with the goal of 100% donations for labor and product.

Idaho Solar Design & Consulting, Inc., a locally owned and operated Solar distributer, installer and consultancy firm, has donated all of the labor associated with the installation.

Thank you, Idaho Renewable Energy Association and Idaho Solar Design & Consulting for this remarkable donation!

New Donation – Solar Inverter!

29 01 2010

An integral part to any home solar system is the inverter, which changes the direct current produced by the solar panels into alternating current.  This allows the electricity to be used within the home to power everything from lighting, to the television, and even a cell phone charger.

SMA Solar Technology has graciously donated a 6000 watt inverter that will be used in conjunction with the solar array on the roof of the home.  These are both big components that will help the home achieve its net zero energy goals.

Donations Continue with a Suite of Appliances Donated from Frigidaire!

2 12 2009

Though it may seem early on to be worried about appliances, they are a significant factor in the amount of energy a home consumes. As a net zero home, there are three major components that significantly affect the home’s energy performance: windows, appliances and the HVAC equipment.

Frigidaire has donated a suite of thier new Gallery line of appliances to be included within the Dream Home!

Frigidaire’s collection of ENERGY STAR qualified appliances are up to 80% more energy-efficient than non-ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. Innovative features minimize energy and water consumption that span across Frigidaire’s product line – from washers that use up to 82% less energy and 60% less water to refrigerators and freezers that use up to 10% less energy, to dishwashers that use at least 41% less energy and 40% less water than was used just 10 years ago. Frigidaire dishwashers use five gallons of water per load vs. 27 gallons for hand washing – that’s a savings of over 50,000 gallons of water over the average life of the product.

Groundbreaking Set for December 1st

Groundbreaking set for Boise’s First Certified Net-Zero Energy Home on December 1

Representatives from Flynner Homes, NORTHWEST ENERGY STAR and Idaho Power will break ground for the 2010 St. Jude Dream Home house in Boise at 10 a.m. on  Tuesday, Dec. 1.  This home, which is being built for the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway benefitting St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is the first certified Net-Zero house in Idaho. Russell and Whitney Lloyd, parents of St. Jude patient Rebekah, will also attend the ceremony.

The multiple partners involved describe it as the ultimate win-win: the home will be built, donated and raffled off as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and it will also be among the nation’s most energy-efficient homes ever built – the first certified Net-Zero Home within Idaho. And for the price of a $100 ticket, one person will own a home equipped with the latest energy-efficiency elements in construction– a home that will actually generate as much energy as it uses, delivering on the “net zero” concept of no overall energy consumption and eliminating utility bills for the future homeowner.

The house is located in the Willowgreens community and is valued at approximately $440,000.  Tickets for the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway will be available beginning April 1, 2010.  Tickets will be available throughout the Treasure Valley area at Zamzows and Pioneer Title Co. locations. Other sponsors for the giveaway include KTVB Channel 7, WOW Country 104.3 and KWEI Spanish radio.

“Flynner Homes is grateful to be chosen as the builder of the St Jude Dream Home Giveaway,” said Scott Flynn, owner of Flynner Homes. “St Jude is not only the nation’s primary driving force behind research for children’s cancers, but is now also a driving force in reducing negative environmental impacts caused by inefficient homes by insisting on building to a net-zero energy level. Flynner Homes and the Boise community are excited to raise money for such a worthy cause”.
